An energetic piano trio written during an exciting time of life!

Description

This piece was fun, as it was the first time I’d have a professional ensemble perform my music. It was for class, and under contract they asked not to be named on these recordings.

I had accidently done the math wrong, and the piece was originally written to be slower than this. However, they were so skilled they could play it quite well despite the speed. Now as I listen to it, the piece is far more compelling at that speed and I’m glad they were able to pull it off.

During our class’s discussions with them, the pianist in particular, brought up that composers write scores to be more complicated than they need to be. So he actually rewrites their scores often to be able to perform them better or learn them quicker. That really stuck with me, and I made it a goal to not overcomplicate my scores, just to make it look fancier.

I also remember asking the pianist during lunch, “when you’re at your skill level, is there anything that makes music difficult?” I was serious, I didn’t actually think they would be able to sight-read this piece so easily let alone at a faster speed than I intended. I mean, I had him doing what I perceived as a difficult rhythm the whole freaking piece! He said something along the lines of, “Good question. I really think it comes down to notation. At my level, you can pretty much play anything you can imagine”.
